August 2016 Los Angeles Food Events

Well the summer is winding down, the food events are just ramping up!

August 4, 2016 – An Evening on the Beach:  Supporting St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, this is event at the Jonathan Beach Club in Santa Monica features more than two dozen talented chefs, pastry chefs, and mixologist’s from some of most popular restaurants in LA, including Gino Angelini (Angelini Osteria), Genevieve Gergis (Bestia), Mark Peel (Bombo), Kevin Meehan (Kali Restaurant), Bruce Kalman (Union), Micah Wexler (Wexler’s Deli), and Ryan Wainwright (Bombet Hospitality Group).  Tickets are $185.

August 6, 2016 – Plate by Plate Los Angeles:  This was the food event that got me started covering food events years ago.  Benefitting Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team this year, the event features a line up of restaurants curated by none other than Kevin “kevinEats” Hsu.  VIP participants include Baldoria, Barrel & Ashes, and Scratch|Bar.  General Admission talents are no slouches either, with Hanjip, Restauration, Sotto, Rosaliné, Little Sister, Petty Cash, Mardi, Hamasaku, République, well you get the idea.  Looks like only GA tickets are available now, at $150.

August 7 – California Spirit 31:  For three decades this event has raised money for the American Cancer Society with great food from top talents in LA.  This year is no different, with Michael Voltaggio as the hosting chef, and with restaurants such as Barrel & Ashes, Cannibal, Roku, Tavern, and more, feeding the attendees.  Tickets are $350.

August 25-28 – Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival:  One of the most epic food festivals in Los Angeles returns with 4 days of events planned (check out my review of last year).  And this year the daytime Grand Tastings are back on Saturday and Sunday!  But starting off is Thursday Night’s Eat The World with Emeril Lagasse, featuring chefs like Angelo Auriana (Officine Brera), Alvin Cailan (Egg Slut), Ryan DeNicola (Chi Spacca), Fabian Gallardo (Petty Cash), Walter Manzke (République),  and more.

Friday continues the tradition of smaller lunch events with multiple chefs hosting meals at various restaurants around town, like Vartan Abgaryan and George Mendes at 71 Above, Brandon Kida and Kevin Meehan at Hinoki and the Bird, and Nyesha Arrington, Francis Derby, Evan Funke, and Jason Neroni at The Rose Café.  Friday wraps up with the annual Night Market hosted by Jet Tila and Brian Malarkey with Elizabeth Falkner (Falk Yeah!), Chris Jacobson (Girasol), Pawan Mahendro (Badmaash), Tin Vuong (Little Sister), and more!

Saturday brings back the daytime Lexus Grand Tasting with Perry Cheung (Phorage), Evan Funke (Felix), Ted Hopson (Bellwether), Joji Inoue (Chaya Downtown), Bruce Kalman (Union), Bree Miller (Bree’s Cakes), and more!  Live on Grand returns Saturday night, hosted by Tyler Florence, with Ori Menache and Genevieve Gergis (Bestia), Michael Kahikina and Rory Herrmann (Barrel & Ashes), Tim Hollingsworth (Otium), Yoya Takahashi (Hamasaku), Nguyen and Thi Tran (Starry Kitchen), and Dakota Weiss (Estrella, Sweetfin Poke), and more.

Saturday night also brings a new evening event, Sunset Grill n’ Chill at the Fairmont Miramar, hosted by Rick Bayless, with Sam Baxter (Connie & Ted’s), Ben Ford (Ford Filling Station), Yousef Ghalani (FIG), Nick Shipp (Upper West), and John Tesar (Knife at the Highland).

The Lexus Grand Tasting returns on Sunday with Hugh Acheson (5 & 10), Stephanie Izard (Girl & the Goat), Antonia Lofaso (Scopa Italian Roots), Tyler Malek (Salt & Straw), Charles Phan (Slanted Door), Marcel Vigneron (WOLF), and more!  Tickets are $125 each for most of the events across the weekend, with VIP access going for more!
