LA Weekly‘s second annual Sips & Sweets festival took place at Magic Box, part of The REEF complex, on Saturday, December 12, 2015. The event featured 20+ “Sweets” purveyors and nearly as many “Sips” mixologists and bartenders. I tried plenty of amazing drinks and treats, and below were some of my favorites.
On the “Sweets” side, I really enjoyed ICDC‘s lemon cream doughnuts, Salt & Straw‘s pineapple sherbet with housemade truffle gummy bears, and Ococoa‘s almond cherry cups. Apparently Salt & Straw and Ococoa will be collaborating on something in the future, so be on the look out for that!
I don’t actually have that big of a sweet tooth, so I was glad to see a few tables offering savory dishes. Superba Food + Bread served some delicious avocado toast, while Craft‘s cream cheese balls were addicting!
On the drinks front, I actually found a lot I liked, including the Courvoisier-based “Wirebird” by A.O.C.‘s Christiaan Röllich and the rummy “Mr. Menotti’s Cold Coffee Grog” by Ryan Wainwright of Terrine. But my favorite was a sips-and-sweets combo in the form of a boozy, gingery paleta called “Uncle Buck” from Buddy Pops.
Personally, while the quality of the food was top notch, I think the theme of the event is a little too narrow, so that even someone with a sweet tooth might burn out on the sweets rather quickly. Fortunately, the handful of savory dishes tempered the sugar rush, and the drinks offered a lot more variety than I had assumed going in.
